Learn to Save a Life: Suicide Prevention Training
StartMay 24
EndMay 24
Would you spend one hour to learn how to save a life? The signs of crisis are all around us. Do you know how to recognize them?  In this two-part training, you will learn the three simple steps anyone can use to help save a life from suicide. You'll walk away equipped to notice “pre-warning” signs and know how to take action steps before the issues become serious. MQC Program Director Kimberly Britt Petersen will kick off the training by teaching the QPR method—Question, Persuade and Refer—so that you can be empowered to make a positive difference in the life of someone you know.  Then Joannie DeBrito, LCSW will jump into the Alive to Thrive curriculum, the exhaustive suicide prevention resource developed by Focus on the Family. This curriculum is centered around building a strong foundation at home and preparing kids for healthy living. Together, we can learn how to recognize the warning signs and learn effective tools on how to intervene when crisis hits.  You just might save a life. About our speakers:  Joannie DeBrito is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with 30 years of experience providing individual, couple and family therapy; facilitating numerous groups, classes and seminars; directing human service programs and supervising other mental health professionals. She is the current Director of Parenting and Youth at Focus on the Family and was the previous Director of University Counseling Services at Colorado Christian University. She has been married to her husband John for almost 40 years and has two married daughters and two grandchildren. Kimberly Britt Petersen is the Program Director for My Quiet Cave. She holds a BA in TV/Video from Emerson College and an MA in Counseling from Colorado Christian University. She and her family live in Denver, Colorado.

EndMay 28
Have you, a friend, partner or family member experienced ageism? Have you caught yourself using ageist language, e.g., “I’m having a senior moment”? Do you get frustrated and angry by ageist stereotypes you see in the media, and the failure to recognize the strengths and talents that older people bring? If so, please join us for a fun and interactive workshop on this important topic and learn how we can all better address ageism when we see it. You’ll learn: What ageism is, and the harmful effects it has not only on older adults, but also on our communities and the economy What the general public believes about older people and about aging in America • Why telling a new story about aging and ageism is so important The benefits to all of us as we age of having positive views of aging How words and phrases in common use can have negative consequences that we don't intend because they reinforce ageist attitudes and prejudicial stereotypes about older people Language that we can use instead to advance a different story about aging and older people You'll leave with some concrete tips and tactics for using the new language and messages, and for addressing ageism, and sharing them with those around you. The workshop will be facilitated by Janine Vanderburg from Changing the Narrative in Colorado, a campaign to change the way people in our state think, talk and act about aging and ageism. Read more about us here: https://changingthenarrativeco.org/ If you or someone you know has experienced ageism, or if you simply want to know more about why this is important—you won’t want to miss this.
